What does the idle air control valve do?

The idle air control valve (IACV) – also known as an idle speed controller or idle stepper motor – regulates the airflow bypassing the throttle body when the throttle plate is closed. It ensures a stable idle speed under all conditions: cold starts, air conditioning load, or increased electrical demand. A worn or sticking IACV typically causes rough idling, engine stalling, or RPM hunting between 500 and 1,000 rpm.
